Desert Crossings is a collaboration by South-West-based State of Emergency and South African choreographer Gregory Maqoma to create an inspirational site specific dance and film spectacle and a national tour, involving communities across the South West and in South Africa. Desert Crossings is a cross-cultural project inspired by the South West’s Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site and its link to Africa’s Skeleton Coast.
Desert Crossings celebrates London 2012′s Olympic values, building bridges between two continents and tracing our shared memories and the earth’s history through the sands of time. The Desert Crossings vision takes us on a journey of discovery, welcoming the world to the South West, and engaging communities in a global conversation about universal hopes and dreams of a better world.
Desert Crossings has been shortlisted for the Artists taking the lead commission, to represent the South West in London 2012′s Cultural Olympiad. Out of the 2613 submissions received across the UK, only 59 have been shortlisted. And out of these only 12 projects will be selected later this month.
Leave your comment for the selection panel on the Artists taking the Lead website. Let them know why you feel the Desert Crossings vision is important, and why Desert Crossings should be selected to be one of 12 arts projects at the London 2012 Olympics.
